La política en disputa/La política em disputa: A report from the LGBTIQ+ Political Participation Observatory of the Americas and the Caribbean

October 20, 2026

This new report from the LGBTIQ+ Political Participation Observatory of the Americas and the Caribbean takes a close look at LGBT+ political participation in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico. It was produced by Caribe Afirmativo and VoteLGBT with support from LGBTQ+ Victory Institute. The research draws on more than 60 in-depth interviews with LGBT+ candidates, elected officials and campaign leaders, along with each country’s electoral laws, party structures and candidate data. It documents the growth of LGBT+ candidacies between 2020 and 2024, the political violence those candidates increasingly face, and the strategies they use to resist it and win. It closes with recommendations for governments, electoral authorities and political parties on making political participation safe and inclusive.
