We had the honor of presenting our latest report, Democracy Demands Equality, at the Mexican Congress. The event was co-organized by our LGBTIQ+ Political Participation Observatory of the Americas and the Caribbean and the Congressional Committee on Sexual Diversity, chaired by Congressman Jaime López Vela.

📊 Why is it relevant:
Mexico is currently debating a profound electoral reform. Our report provides critical data and recommendations to ensure that hard-won affirmative action measures for LGBTIQ+ representation are not only maintained but strengthened.
🌈 Who was with us:
We were joined by long-time allies and partners, including Wilson Castañeda of Caribe Afirmativo (Colombia), Paola Santillán of Yaaj México, Congresswoman Carolina Giraldo (Colombia), our Victory Institute alumni and current Global Equality Caucus member Erick Iván Ortiz (El Salvador), and Congressman Víctor Hugo Lobo, President of the Political-Electoral Reform Committee.

🏛️ Key highlights:
- Deputy López Vela shared new official figures: in 2024, 410 openly LGBTIQ+ people were elected across Mexico, including 44 state legislators across 25 states and 19 mayors.
- Our Observatory report was spotlighted as a valuable regional resource to inform ongoing debates and policy design.
- The event reinforced the importance of international solidarity in defending and advancing political participation rights.
✨ Why it matters for Victory Institute:
Events like this demonstrate the growing relevance of the work the LGBTQ Victory Institute is leading in the countries where we engage. We are increasingly recognized as a key technical reference in advancing LGBTIQ+ political participation and shaping the conversations that strengthen democracy in our region.
This was a powerful moment to ensure that evidence, community leadership, and regional collaboration inform Mexico’s, and Latin America’s democratic future.
