Alex Greenwich is the Independent Member for Sydney in the New South Wales Parliament. He played a central role in the Australian Marriage Equality campaign and helped lead the successful YES campaign in the 2017 postal survey on marriage equality.
In 2023, he introduced the LGBTIQA+ Equality Bill to remove outdated and discriminatory laws in New South Wales. The Bill passed Parliament in 2024 with key reforms taking effect from July 1, 2025. These include updated gender recognition laws, protections against hate crimes and outing people, and legal recognition of parents through overseas surrogacy. Alex was the driving force behind the nation-leading NSW LGBTQ Health Strategy, and he secured multi-partisan support to ban LGBTQ conversion therapy in NSW.
In 2024, Greenwich received the Commonwealth-wide Parliamentarian of the Year award, recognizing his work on LGBTQ+ rights, women’s reproductive rights, and voluntary assisted dying.
