LGBTQ+ Victory Institute President & CEO Evan Low issues the following statement on increased security risks and safety needs for LGBTQ+ public officials.
“Political violence is a growing reality, with elected officials facing unprecedented threats—especially women, people of color, and LGBTQ+ leaders, who are disproportionately targeted by hate. Our own research confirms this disturbing trend.
In 2023, we reported that more than 70% of LGBTQ+ candidates faced anti-LGBTQ+ attacks. In response, we’ve developed programs to support their safety, mental health, and well-being. As political threats rise, we urge all elected officials—LGBTQ+ or not—to take necessary steps to safeguard themselves.
San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones is a courageous leader committed to real change. Despite credible threats against her, recent reporting has questioned her need for a security detail and revealed sensitive information, further endangering her. We stand firmly with Mayor Jones and support the City of San Antonio’s efforts to protect her.”
