WASHINGTON—The LGBTQ Victory Institute’s quarterly LGBTQ Elected Official Convenings announced today that AARP will be its presenting sponsor. The convenings bring together LGBTQ elected officials from across the nation to discuss current issues and ways to advance equality for LGBTQ people. The investment by AARP – the nation’s largest nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to empowering people 50 and older to choose how they live as they age – is the latest of many annual contributions to Victory Institute’s programmatic work.
“We are so grateful AARP continues to support Victory Institute and our LGBTQ elected officials network,” said Mayor Annise Parker, President & CEO of LGBTQ Victory Institute. “Thanks to their generous sponsorship of our LGBTQ Elected Official Convenings, we can provide the space and opportunity for hundreds of LGBTQ leaders at every level of government to strategize ways to improve the lives of all Americans. It would not be possible without their commitment.”
“AARP’s unwavering commitment to the LGBTQ community reflects our core belief in the dignity, worth, and potential of every individual, including our million-plus members who identify as LGBTQ,” said Shani Hosten, Vice President, African American/Black Audience Strategy & LGBTQ Audience Strategy in AARP’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion group. “Together with LGBTQ Victory Institute, we can help support and further build a strong network of government leaders within the LGBTQ community to ensure they are well represented across the nation.”
The next LGBTQ Elected Officials Convening will be held virtually on April 23, 2021 and will focus on effectively responding to the COVID-19 pandemic as vaccines are rolled out across the United States. Mayor Robert Garcia of Long Beach – who is widely regarded as leading one of the most effective vaccine distribution efforts in the country – will share his advice as a guest speaker.
