Reports to: Director of Elected & Appointed Officials Engagement 

For over three decades, LGBTQ+ Victory Institute has helped to train, place, and elect thousands of openly LGBTQ+ public officials at every level of government. Our leaders have been catalysts for expanding legal rights for LGBTQ+ people across the country, and they have transformed our nation’s policies and shifted our political landscape towards equality, one election at a time. Today, over 1200 LGBTQ+ Americans are serving in elected office due to the work of Victory. Victory’s work continues as LGBTQ+ people are severely underrepresented in all levels of government – serving in only 0.23% of all elected offices in the United States. 

The Elected & Appointed Officials Engagement Manager is an integral part of LGBTQ+ Victory Institute and will work directly with the Director of Elected & Appointed Officials Engagement to support the organization’s Presidential Appointments Program and the network of LGBTQ+ Elected Officials. 

General Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Elected & Appointed Officials Engagement, the Elected & Appointed Officials Manager will focus primarily on ensuring the success of Victory’s Presidential Appointments Program along with support of Victory’s network of LGBTQ+ elected officials. 

Victory’s Presidential Appointments Program is a coalition of more than 30 LGBTQ+ organizations that work to support presidential administrations in ensuring qualified LGBTQ+ people are included in the federal government across all agencies and levels. Victory leads the nonpartisan initiative which accepts resumes from LGBTQ+ leaders interested in working in a presidential administration. Victory Institute reviews the resumes and provides support to candidates to assist administrations with filing open full-time and part-time positions – including on boards and advisory committees. 

LGBTQ+ Victory Institute also provides regular opportunities for our network of more than 1200 out LGBTQ+ elected officials to convene and connect on the critical issues facing the communities they serve. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Presidential Appointments Program 

  • Build and maintain a pipeline of qualified LGBTQ+ leaders for the presidential administration including recruitment, identification, vetting, preparing, and tracking of candidates. 
  • Update a database of applications and ensure that records and reports are accurate. 
  • Provide a high level of customer service to Victory stakeholders and LGBTQ leaders seeking a federal appointment. 
  • Develop engagement opportunities for appointed officials to build relationships with each other, expand their policy knowledge, build their visibility, and connect with Victory throughout the year. 
  • Manage new and existing relationships with out appointed officials. 
  • Utilize a variety of engagement tools including events, meetings, calls, and online communication to connect with a rapidly expanding network of out public leaders. 
  • Work with the Political, Communications, and Development teams as well as the Board of Directors to maximize opportunities and visibility for out public leaders serving around the globe. 

Elected Officials Engagement 

  • Manage the Out for America Map – LGBTQ+ Victory Institute’s interactive map that shows known openly LGBTQ+ elected officials at every level of government across the country. 
  • Support planning of Elected Official events such as NCSL Reception, Congressional Pride Reception, etc. 
  • Assist with the planning of the Elected Official Summit at LGBTQ+ Victory’s annual International LGBTQ+ Leaders Conference. 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from four-year college or university; plus at least three years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience. 
  • Experience and commitment to working within a team to solidify engagement opportunities for elected & appointed officials. 
  • Experience in working with elected and appointed officials, as well as the ability to build and maintain those relationships. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work effectively with senior leadership, elected/appointed officials and their staffs as well as appropriately handle confidential information. 
  • Ability to cultivate positive working relationships internally and externally. 
  • Ability to effectively represent the organization in meetings, trainings and media. 
  • Attention to detail and macro level reasoning skills. 
  • Ease with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and PowerPoint 
  • Demonstrated comfort with databases, templates, formatting and data visualization. 
  • Demonstrated passion for LGBTQ+ equality and public leadership. 
  • Ability and willingness to travel. 

Position is based in Washington, DC. 

Full-time staff are eligible for Victory’s comprehensive benefits package including medical, vision, dental, health reimbursement account, medical flexible spending account, life insurance, short- and long-term disability, 401k, parental leave and generous paid time off. 

The salary range for this position is $60,000 – $70,000.
