Mo Shatara

Founding Director, Democracy Security Project

Mo Shatara is an experienced strategist whose work at the Democracy Security Project has focused on developing curriculum and content, training organizers and civic leaders, and equipping communities with the tools needed to recognize, resist, and respond to threats facing democratic institutions. Drawing on his background as a community organizer and educator, Mo has helped design and deliver engaging, accessible programming that strengthens civic resilience and prepares individuals and organizations to navigate an increasingly complex democratic landscape.

In addition to his work with the Democracy Security Project, Mo serves as NEWCO’s Senior Advocacy & Innovation Strategist, where he guides campaigns, nonprofits, donor tables, and academic institutions through strategic planning, program development, and leadership alignment. He helps organizations strengthen their capacity, clarify their vision, and adapt effectively to fast-shifting political and cultural dynamics. Mo has spent nearly 15 years as a community and electoral organizer, building power in low-income, immigrant, and BIPOC communities across the country—especially in the American South and key battleground states.
