Janet Mills
she/her
Governor, State of Maine
Governor Janet Mills is the first woman governor of Maine. In her historic victories, she earned more votes than any governor in Maine history and is the first governor since 1970 to be elected with a majority of the vote for both terms in office. Before serving as Governor, she was the first and only woman to serve as Maine’s Attorney General and the first woman District Attorney in New England.
During her two terms as Governor, she has worked to make Maine a safe and welcoming place: a state where every person can live freely, unafraid of being discriminated against because of who they are or who they love. She has prohibited exclusions for transgender people in public and private health insurance plans, restored state veterans benefits to soldiers who were discharged from the military due solely to their sexual orientation or gender identity, ended the use of the gay and trans “panic” defense, simplified the process for obtaining accurate gender markers on personal identity documents, required coverage for and increased access to PrEP and PEP, shielded health care providers and patients in Maine from prosecution or lawsuits from states that have restrictive laws, and banned the harmful and discredited practice of “conversion therapy” on minors.
She is proud of the progress Maine has made, but she also recognizes that LGBTQ people are still experiencing acts of violence, and that a patchwork of legal protections varying dramatically from state to state is not acceptable. She supports comprehensive federal nondiscrimination protections, and opposes dangerous efforts to roll back progress in Congress and the courts. She believes that we can’t stop fighting for a better country for all and she is proud to always stand up for what’s right.
