LGBTQ+ State Legislators

As anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ+ legislation continues to increase across the country, state legislators continue to play a critical role in pushing back against such legislation and advancing inclusive policies that protect the community. 

Consistent with 2025, Louisiana, Idaho, and Wyoming continue to have no LGBTQ+ representation in its state legislatures. In total, the number of LGBTQ+ state legislators increased by 1% (243 in 2025 to 245 in 2026). 

Over half (58%) of LGBTQ+ state legislator are white while 40% of LGBTQ+ state legislators are people of color. Cisgender LGBTQ+ state legislators make up 86% of LGBTQ+ state legislators. Transgender state legislators make up 4% of LGBTQ+ state legislators.
