Gender Identity of LGBTQ+ Elected Officials by Year
LGBTQ+ elected officials as a whole continue to become more gender diverse since 2017, when Out for America reporting began. As well, the diversity of gender identities has expanded since the beginning of this report. Transgender representation is dramatically higher than 2017 (up by 833%), when reporting began, contributing to the dynamic growth of LGBTQ+ elected officials who are not cisgender.
While cisgender women elected officials decreased by 4.2% between 2025 and 2026, the number drastically increased compared to 2017 by 145%.
