LGBTQ+ State Legislators
As hundreds of state bills seek to limit, target or eliminate LGBTQ+ rights nationwide, state legislators are critical in the fight for equality. Louisiana continues to have no LGBTQ+ elected representation in its state legislature, and Wyoming, Guam and Puerto Rico each lost 1 LGBTQ+ state legislator between 2024 and 2025.
Wisconsin added the most LGBTQ+ state legislators between 2024 and 2025, doubling their count from 6 to 12. California added five new LGBTQ+ legislators, increasing its total to 16, the highest number of LGBTQ+ legislators in the nation. Eleven states only have 1 LGBTQ+ state legislator in their entire legislative body (Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, South Dakota, Utah and West Virginia).
