Gender Identity of LGBTQ+ Elected Officials by Year
LGBTQ+ elected officials as a whole continue to become more gender diverse since 2017, when Out for America reporting began. As well, the diversity of gender identities has expanded since the beginning of this report. Transgender representation grew slightly between 2024 and 2025, but is still dramatically higher than 2017, when reporting began, contributing to the dynamic growth of LGBTQ+ elected officials who are not cisgender.
Nonbinary representation remained the same between 2024 and 2025, but has grown 3900% since 2017. Transgender, gender nonconforming and nonbinary representation increased 1800% overall since 2017, with transgender men growing 350% since 2017 and transgender women increasing 875% since 2017.
