LGBTQ+ State Legislators
LGBTQ+ state legislators are a vital line of defense against anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and rhetoric becoming encoded into laws nationwide. Louisiana remains the only state to have never elected an out LGBTQ+ state legislator, with Mississippi having elected its first last year. Currently three states have no out LGBTQ+ state legislator: Idaho, Louisiana and West Virginia. 10 states lost at least one LGBTQ+ state legislator between June 2023 and May 2024, while nine states increased their number of elected state officials by at least 25%.
