Race & Ethnicity of LGBTQ+ Elected Officials by Year

Since the first Out in America report in 2017, great gains have been achieved in increasing the racial and ethnic diversity of LGBTQ+ candidates nationwide. Programs like the Black Leaders Caucus, Our Future Leaders, and others help to identify, cultivate and support LGBTQ+ elected officials of color.

Black and Latinx LGBTQ+ representation has hit triple digits over the last several years, with 146 and 193 elected officials counted, respectively. Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) LGBTQ+ representation has more than tripled since 2017, and LGBTQ+ candidates of Middle Eastern origin grew from 1 in 2017 to 10 in 2024. Native American LGBTQ+ elected representation has grown by six times since 2017, with 12 out Native American LGBTQ+ elected officials serving in 2024.
