LGBTQ+ Elected Officials by State and Territory
For the first time, all 50 states and the District of Columbia have known out LGBTQ+ elected officials serving. Idaho and Mississippi were the last states to elect any LGBTQ+ representation, closing the state gap this year. Among state legislators in particular, Idaho, Louisiana, and West Virginia are the only states with zero known out LGBTQ+ state lawmakers currently serving. There are also two territory-wide elected officials in Guam and two territory legislators: one senator in Guam and another in Puerto Rico.
Fabian Nelson became Mississippi’s first out state legislator after winning his 2013 Democratic primary and uncontested election, in part because of collaboration with Victory Institute on training. Nelson is now one of our 2024 David Bohnett Leaders Fellows.
